Lhoist plays an active part in the 10th International Lime Congress in Washington DC
Three presentations were given by Lhoist Group members at the 10th International Lime Congress which
was held between May 7th and 10th, 2002, at the Ronald Reagan International Trade Centre in Washington, D.C. :
Spongiacal®: A High-Performance Absorbent for Acid Gas Treatment
Spongiacal® is a calcium hydroxide developed by Lhoist for treating acid gases in dry scrubber processes. Its advantages are low investment costs, ease to use, its simplicity and strength, and its lack of liquid effluent. In addition, Spongiacal® also meets the strictest emission standards.
Due to the fast growing success of this product, as well as the global threat that sodium bicarbonate poses to the lime-treated gas sector, the Lhoist Group has granted production licences. One example is: Okutama Kogyo in Japan.
Influence of a Low Dust Emission Lime on the Development of Soil Treatment in Civil Engineering
In response to civil engineering needs (construction of roads, railways, airports and different types of platforms), the Lhoist Group has developed Proviacal®, a low dust emission quicklime, to improve application conditions in soil treatment works and to preserve construction site surroundings. This product has been developed over the last three decades and has seen an expansion in its various applications.
Balcopure®, an Effective Solution for the Treatment of Liquid Effluents
The development of industrial farming has led to a massive amount of animal effluents being spread, without precaution, on agricultural land in the vicinity of farms, without any precautions being taken. When these effluents are present in quantities greater than the capacity of soil and plants needed to eliminate them, they saturate the soil in nitrogen and phosphorus, which pollute both surface and ground water. Stringent regulations, aimed at limiting the use of these effluents to the strict requirements of fertilisation, have resulted in the development of treatment processes. One of these is Balcopure®, a modular physicochemical process, which uses reagents containing calcium hydroxide. The resulting liquid manure can be used to irrigate plots of land close the farms and the other products can either be re-used on the farm or transported outside the local area by marketing organisations.
The International Lime Association (ILA) is an organisation that brings lime industry trade associations and lime companies from around the world together every four years to share information on the production and uses of this vital material. The ILA Congress covers developments in its member countries in order to optimise lime manufacturing operations and other topics of interest.
